About St Thomas' Church
St Thomas’ Church stands on Thurlbear Road in Thurlbear, within the parish of Orchard Portman near Taunton, Somerset. It is a Grade I listed building and is no longer used as a parish church. The church is maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust, which assumed responsibility for it on 1 November 1988.
Dating from the early 12th century, the building retains clear evidence of its Norman origins despite later additions. Its Norman arcades and unusually narrow aisles preserve the modest scale of the original design, which was not widened during the later medieval period. Architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner considered it to date from around 1110 at the latest. A programme of repairs was later undertaken by the Trust alongside archaeological recording and a survey carried out by Somerset County Council.
