About St George's Church

St George’s Church is a Roman Catholic parish church on Billetfield in Taunton, Somerset. It remains one of the town’s two Catholic churches. The main building is listed at Grade II*, while the adjoining rectory has Grade II status.

The church was designed by Benjamin Bucknall after the local Catholic congregation outgrew an earlier chapel. Its foundation stone was laid in 1858, it opened in 1860, and it was consecrated in 1912. Built in a Gothic Revival style, it uses red Monkton stone with dressed Bath stone details. The design includes a clerestoried nave, Decorated Gothic windows, a chancel with a chapel on either side, and a tower influenced by traditional Somerset examples. Bucknall planned a tall spire above the tower, but this was not completed. A west window of stained glass was installed in 1928 in memory of Canon James O’Shaughnessy.
