About Saint Michael the Archangel
Saint Michael the Archangel is a Church of England parish church in Dundry, Bristol, Somerset, on Church Road. It is protected as a Grade I listed building. After closing in 2015 because loose ceiling plaster posed a safety risk, the church reopened in September 2018 following extensive renovation and a fundraising campaign supported by heritage grants.
Its four-stage tower dates from about 1484 and rises to 30 metres from a prominent hilltop site. Buttresses support the structure, which has four corner turrets and a polygonal stair turret on the north-east side. The oldest of its six bells was cast in 1642. G. B. Gabriel rebuilt the remainder of the church in 1861, replacing an earlier medieval structure. Beneath slate roofs are a nave, chancel, chapel and aisles to the north and south. The churchyard contains an alms table made from dressed local stone, an ancient scheduled cross and several mid-18th-century chest tombs.
