About St Martin of Tours
St Martin of Tours is an active Church of England parish church on Church Street in West Coker, Somerset. It is protected as a Grade II* listed building and shares its parish arrangements with six neighbouring churches, including those at East Coker, East Chinnock and Hardington Mandeville.
The church has thirteenth-century origins but underwent substantial reconstruction in 1863–64, directed by Crewkerne architect James Mountford Allen. Both arcades and the chancel arch were renewed, while the northern arcade gained an additional western bay. The chancel received decorated plasterwork between its roof timbers, oak seating and a floor of encaustic tiles by Maw & Co. A reredos was produced by A. W. Blacker of Dawlish. Nicholson and Lord of Walsall built the organ, installed in 1885 as a gift from Miss Wood. Eight bells hang in the tower: five were cast by Thomas II Bilbie in 1770 and 1779, with three later bells dating from 1911.
