About Church of St Peter, Empingham
The Church of St Peter, Empingham is a Church of England place of worship in Whitwell, Rutland. Dating chiefly from around 1250, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.
A church occupied the site in Norman times, although most of the surviving fabric is from the 13th century. Its earliest section is the south arcade, with the chancel also belonging to that period and containing two piscina basins and three seats for clergy. The north aisle followed during the 14th century. In the 15th century, a clerestory was inserted, the roof was heightened and carved figures were added. Notable survivals include a partially obscured medieval image of the Virgin Mary on the south wall. The north transept contains stone grave slabs and a painted representation of the faces of Saints Joachim and Anne.
