About St Andrew's Church, Hambleton

St Andrew's Church, Hambleton, is an active Church of England parish church in Whitwell, Rutland. Recognised for its special architectural and historic interest, it is listed at Grade II*. Its origins may reach back to the late Anglo-Saxon period, and it is among the few Rutland churches recorded in the Domesday survey.

Much of the surviving structure was created between about 800 and 1190, although restoration during the 1890s altered its appearance. The south entrance has carving from around 1180, while the tower was built around 1200 and the clerestory added during the fourteenth century. Notable furnishings include an iron-bound oak chest, a chained first-edition King James Bible from 1611, and a Victorian pulpit incorporating seventeenth-century elements. Most of the stained glass is by James Egan. Medieval features include carved grave slabs, three seats for clergy and a decorated basin recess.
