About St Non's Chapel
St Non’s Chapel is a ruined coastal place of Christian pilgrimage near St Davids in Pembrokeshire. Tradition associates the site with the birth of St David to his mother, Non. Now protected as a scheduled monument and cared for by Cadw, it stands close to a holy well, a twentieth-century chapel and a retreat.
The date of the ruin remains uncertain, although it has been regarded as an early Christian site and became an important destination for medieval pilgrims. Its north-to-south orientation differs from the east-to-west arrangement commonly found in churches. After the Reformation, the building was adapted as a dwelling and later incorporated into a garden. Within the remains is St Non’s Cross, a substantial stone carved with a circular cross and dated to between the seventh and ninth centuries. It may have served as an altar slab or grave marker, though its original connection with the site is unproven.
