St Davids is Britain's smallest city, and it is a city only because of its cathedral, which shelters the shrine of the patron saint of Wales. Two medieval pilgrimages here were counted equal to one to Rome, and the valley setting of the cathedral, hidden from the sea, remains one of Britain's great sacred places.
