About Sailors' Chapel
Sailors' Chapel is a small medieval building in Angle, Pembrokeshire, standing in the burial ground beside St Mary’s parish church. It honours St Anthony and is protected at Grade I for its architectural and historic importance. The chapel later served as a place of rest during the twentieth century.
Edward de Shirburn of Nangle founded the chapel in 1447. Its elevated, vaulted chamber stands over a raised crypt, once used to receive the remains of seafarers who had drowned and been washed ashore. Prayers were also offered there for those setting out to sea. Built from rough masonry, it now has a tiled roof topped by a Celtic cross. Restorations took place in 1853 and 1862, followed by rededication in 1929. Notable features include stained glass by William Wailes, a stone altar associated with St Twinnel’s, and a fifteenth-century male effigy possibly representing the founder.
