About St Mary's Church, Haverfordwest

St Mary’s Church stands near the top of High Street in central Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire. An Anglican place of worship, it serves the parish formed through later unions with St Thomas à Becket and St Martin of Tours. The church has been protected since 1951 and is now designated Grade I for its important medieval fabric and surviving detail.

The main structure originated in the late twelfth century. Following damage caused by Llywelyn the Great in 1220, it was probably reconstructed during the 1240s, when the tower, porches and northern aisle were included. Clerestory windows were inserted in the fifteenth century. A lead-covered wooden spire once crowned the tower, but was taken down as unsafe in 1802. Inside, a panelled timber ceiling dating from around 1500 has decorated beams, rafters, ribs and carved bosses. The two-manual organ was made by Harris and Byfield in 1737.
