About Priory Church of Saint Nicholas
The Priory Church of Saint Nicholas is an active Church of England parish church at Monkton in Pembroke Dock, Pembrokeshire. Standing near the remains of Monkton Priory and overlooking the southern side of the Milford Haven waterway, it is protected as a Grade I listed building.
A church dedicated to St Nicholas was established in 1098, although the precise relationship between that foundation and the present building is uncertain. The medieval priory survived until its dissolution in 1532, after which its nave continued in parish use. Built largely of rubble masonry beneath slate roofs, the church combines Norman work with features from later periods. Its notably elongated nave reflects centuries of structural change. The tower has a battlemented top and an attached stair turret. Extensive restoration was completed in 1895. Interior features include a Victorian font resting on a medieval base, stained glass from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, an 1887 Wade and Meggitt organ, eight bells installed in 1897, and memorials dating from the fifteenth century onwards.
