About St Martin
St Martin is a Church of England parish church in Bole, near Retford in Nottinghamshire. Dating from the medieval period, it remains a parish church and is protected as a Grade II listed building. It forms part of the Clays Group, which brings together several Anglican parishes in the surrounding area.
The church originated in the thirteenth century and underwent restoration by the architect Ewan Christian in 1866. Its tower contains three historic bells mounted in a timber frame. Two were made by Henry II Oldfield in 1611, while the third was cast by John Seliok around 1500 or later. Their fittings have deteriorated, leaving the bells unable to be rung. The chamber below them appears to have housed a clock, and a wartime-era image showed a clock face on the tower’s southern side.
