About St Mary's Church

St Mary’s Church is an active Church of England parish church in Attenborough, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Standing on Church Lane within a walled churchyard, it is protected at Grade I for its exceptional architectural and historical significance.

Although the directory dates the building to 1150, its origins may be earlier. A riverside chapel is traditionally associated with the site in AD 964, while the chancel may date from the 11th century and was documented in 1086. The medieval building includes a chancel, aisled nave with clerestory, south porch, and a western tower crowned by a 40-metre spire. The spire was reconstructed in 1848, and Richard Charles Sutton directed restoration work in 1869. Eight bells hang in the tower, the earliest dating to 1370. The present organ was fitted by Brindley & Foster in 1926–27. Memorials include a colourful 1623 wooden panel displaying the Powtrell family arms.
