About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church stands on Main Road in Barnstone, Nottinghamshire, within the Nottingham area. This Church of England church forms part of the Wiverton group of parishes but is no longer used for worship, having closed in 2017. Proposals to convert the building into a five-bedroom house were submitted in 2019.
Created as a chapel serving St Andrew’s at Langar, the church was probably begun in 1855 and finished in 1857. Thomas Dickinson Hall of Whatton Manor funded the rebuilding at a cost of £1,200. Designed in the Gothic Revival style, the small stone building has a chancel, nave and eastern bell turret housing two bells. Victorian glass survives in the east window and nave windows. Oak fittings include the pews, pulpit, lectern and communion rail. The interior also contains war memorials and 15 small heraldic shields, including one retained from the earlier chapel.
