About Saint Mary Magdalene
Saint Mary Magdalene is an active Church of England parish church in Hucknall, Nottingham, Nottinghamshire. Dedicated to Mary Magdalene, it occupies a churchyard above the town’s market place. The church is protected at Grade II*, recognising its special architectural and historic importance.
Built on the location of an earlier Saxon place of worship, the medieval church developed around a chancel, nave, northern aisle and tower. The tower was constructed in phases from the twelfth to fourteenth centuries, while the southern porch dates from about 1320. Substantial Victorian alterations included a new southern aisle in 1872–74, transepts in 1887–88 and the rebuilding of the Lady Chapel. Notable features include 25 windows designed by Charles Eamer Kempe, an 1869 painting by Daniel Maclise and a ring of eight bells installed in 1958. A medieval Angelus bell is associated with Lord Byron, whose family vault, shared with Ada Lovelace, lies here.
