About St Michael & All Angels

St Michael & All Angels is an Anglican parish church at Howick Hall, near Alnwick in Northumberland. Standing among the hall’s gardens, the church remains a place of parish worship and has Grade II listed status. It welcomes roughly 20,000 visitors each year and has longstanding associations with the Grey family, several of whom rest in its burial ground.

Christian worship at Howick predates the earliest surviving parish record, which names a priest in 1158. The medieval Norman building was destroyed by fire in 1746, and the classical replacement later suffered the same fate. Architect F. J. Francis created the present Victorian church in 1848, using a neo-Norman design characterised by rounded Romanesque openings. He enlarged it with a sanctuary and vestry to the east and a bell-cote at the western end. Maria Copley, third Countess Grey, sculpted gargoyles for the north wall. The churchyard includes the grave of Charles Grey, the former prime minister associated with the 1832 Reform Act.
