About St Michael
St Michael is a Church of England church on Walkergate in Alnwick, Northumberland. Dedicated to Michael the Archangel, it was formerly associated with St Mary as well. The church remains a place of Anglican worship and is protected as a Grade I listed building.
The present church dates chiefly from the fifteenth century, with 1401 given as its building date. It replaced a Norman chapel recorded in 1147, fragments of which survive within the chancel. After damage during fourteenth-century Scottish attacks, the nave and north aisle were repaired in the Decorated Gothic style. Most later medieval work used the Perpendicular style, supported by a royal grant from Henry VI in 1464. Notable details include the broad chancel and its carved octagonal columns. Anthony Salvin directed a substantial restoration in 1863, removing earlier plaster ceilings and a gallery, strengthening the structure, restoring nave columns and pointed arches, and adding windows designed in keeping with the Perpendicular architecture.
