About The Diocesan Shrine and Catholic Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour
The Diocesan Shrine and Catholic Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Succour stands on High Street in Great Billing, Northampton. This Roman Catholic parish church is partnered with Sacred Heart Church at Weston Favell. In 2006, the Bishop of Northampton designated it as the diocesan shrine devoted to Our Lady of Perpetual Succour.
Completed in 1878, the church succeeded a private chapel created at Billing Hall following the Cary Elwes family’s reception into Catholicism. Valentine Cary Elwes financed its construction, choosing a Romanesque Revival design. Above the altar is an artisan-made reproduction of the image known as Our Lady of Perpetual Help. The building gained its side aisles in 1926. In 1994, Ormsby of Scarisbrick constructed a shrine-like architectural frame for the Lady Chapel. The burial ground contains the graves of several Cary Elwes family members, among them Valentine, the singer Gervase Elwes and Bishop Dudley Cary-Elwes.
