About York Oratory
York Oratory is a Roman Catholic church on Duncombe Place in York, North Yorkshire. Dedicated to Saint Wilfrid and serving an active parish, it belongs to the Diocese of Middlesbrough and has been cared for by the Oratorians since 2013. The church received Grade II listed status in 1968.
Catholic worship on the site developed from a mission founded in 1742, following the loss of York’s earlier medieval church of Saint Wilfrid. George Goldie designed the present French Gothic Revival building, completed in 1864 after its foundation stone was laid two years earlier. Its 147-foot tower is a prominent city landmark and contains ten ringing bells, alongside an Angelus bell installed in 2019. Notable interior features include stained glass, detailed sculpture, altar rails made by Wilfrid Dowson in 1948, and an organ built by Forster and Andrews in 1867 and restored in 1998.
