About The Parish Church of St. Thomas with St. Maurice
The Parish Church of St. Thomas with St. Maurice stands on Lowther Street in the Groves district of York, North Yorkshire. It is an active Church of England parish church and has been protected at Grade II since 1997. The building was placed on the Heritage at Risk Register in 2014 after serious weathering affected parts of its masonry.
Designed by George Fowler Jones, the church was erected during 1853 and 1854 for £2,500. Its Gothic Revival design initially provided room for 500 people, and a distinct parish was established for it in 1855. An extension followed in 1899. Sandstone walls and slate-covered roofs enclose a nave of three bays, paired transepts of two bays each, and a chancel also divided into two bays. At the western front, a gabled, projecting middle section carries a bellcote topped by a cross. Architectural details include external supports along the nave, round openings in the transept gables and an eastern window divided into three lights.
