About Stonegrave Minster
Stonegrave Minster, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, is a Church of England parish church in Stonegrave, York, North Yorkshire. It remains in use as a parish church and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. Several tombs and memorials display notable heraldic decoration.
Its origins pre-date 757, when correspondence from Pope Paul I concerned the appointment of an abbot. The earliest church was a tall, narrow rectangular building, and part of its western wall may survive. Norman alterations in the 12th century added arcades, extended the chancel and created a northern aisle with a chapel dedicated to St Leonard. The arches combine pale local stone with brown material quarried near Whitby. During restoration in 1863, fragments of carved crosses dating from the 9th and 10th centuries were discovered, including a largely complete cross influenced by the artistic traditions of Iona and Galloway.
