St Stephen’s serves Acomb, a York suburb in North Yorkshire, as an active Church of England parish church. The building has been protected at Grade II since 1983.
Worship at this location can be traced back to the Saxon era, and evidence of that early structure came to light in 1830. With the previous building in a poor state, George Townsend Andrews drew up plans for a new church, completed during 1831 and 1832. It has a cruciform layout, walls of limestone quarried at Tadcaster and slate covering the roof. The surviving chancel was remodelled in 1851, followed later by a vestry and a new eastern window. A replacement roof was completed in 1952, and bells dating from 1770 arrived in 1954 from St Mary Bishophill Senior. Restoration followed a 1992 fire, with numerous interior features preserved. These include a 1662 window by Edmund Gyles showing Charles II’s heraldry, while the porch contains the arms of William IV.
