About St Paul's Holgate
St Paul’s Holgate is a Church of England parish church in the Holgate suburb of York, North Yorkshire. Situated beside Holgate Road, it remains the parish’s church and has been protected as a Grade II listed building since 1997.
Created in response to the district’s rapid residential growth during the 1840s, the building was erected in 1850–51 and consecrated in 1856. J. B. and W. Atkinson produced its Gothic Revival design, using a brick core clad in sandstone beneath slate roofing. Its interior is divided by cast-iron supports, with side aisles adjoining the combined nave and sanctuary. At the western front, buttressing and paired pinnacles frame an entrance beneath a prominent circular window, while a small bell housing crowns the gable. Alterations in 1890 enlarged the sanctuary by taking in some of the nave. A replacement window at the eastern end, designed by George Fowler Jones, followed in 1906. The timber roof uses king posts, collars and curved bracing, and the former rear gallery now provides workspace and a meeting area.
