About St Mary's Church
St Mary’s Church is the Church of England parish church serving Gate Helmsley, a North Yorkshire village near York, between the city and Stamford Bridge. It remains an active place of worship and has held Grade II* listed status since 1953.
Elements of the building survive from the 1200s, including an octagonal-bowled font, while the western tower was erected during the 1400s. Constructed in sandstone beneath Welsh slate, the church comprises a three-bay nave, two-bay chancel, southern aisle and northern chapel. Extensive work in 1885–86 introduced a replacement chancel and reconstructed the nave’s eastern section. Ward and Hughes created stained glass installed from 1890 to 1910. Other features include a medieval lancet reset in the chapel and a 12th-century capital adapted as a holy-water stoup. Three bells were made by John Warner in 1889, and Abbott and Smith designed the organ in 1913.
