About St Mary
St Mary is the Church of England parish church for Sand Hutton, near York in North Yorkshire. The parish, formed in 1861, also covers Claxton. Dedicated to the mother of Jesus, the church was added to the Grade II register in 1985.
The present church dates from 1840–1842 and occupies the burial ground associated with an earlier chapel dedicated to St Leonard. Anthony Salvin prepared the original design, while C. Hodgson Fowler altered the building in 1885–1886 and introduced a choir. Sandstone walls support a roof covered with slate from Westmorland, and the tower retains some medieval material. The layout comprises the main worship space, chancel, organ room on the north side and a steeple to the south. Its three-level tower contains the porch, with a pointed entrance, narrow arched window, twin openings for the bells and a broach spire. A monument inside commemorates Deborah Read, who died in 1794.
