About St John The Baptist Church
St John the Baptist Church is a Church of England place of worship on New Road in Hessay, near York, North Yorkshire. Built for the village, it remains notable for retaining its original simplicity, with neither electric power nor a heating system added.
Before its construction, Hessay residents worshipped at All Saints in Moor Monkton. Building began in 1898 to a design by Charles Hodgson Fowler, and the church was consecrated on 8 November 1899. Costing approximately £1,000, it initially accommodated 72 people. The red-brick structure has stone detailing and a tiled roof, with a nave, chancel, vestry and western bellcote. Its west window contains five lights, while the traceried east window has three. A central aisle divides the interior; woodblocks cover the nave floor and tiles line the chancel. The organ arrived in 1905 from St Philip and St James in Clifton.
