St Giles is Skelton’s Church of England parish church, situated on Church Lane beside the village green in northern York. Still serving as a parish church, it has been protected at Grade I since 1986. The dedication was formerly to All Saints but later changed to Saint Giles.
The building dates from the early thirteenth century and was certainly finished by 1247. Local tradition says surplus stone from work at York Minster was used, while the craftsmanship has also been linked to masons employed there. Its compact plan comprises a short nave, chancel and flanking aisles under one sloping roof. Architectural details include narrow pointed windows, old stained glass in the northern aisle and a contemporary font. A modest western spire once held a pair of bells but was taken down in the 1700s. Henry Graham carried out restoration between 1810 and 1818, including substantial work on the porch, and Ewan Christian directed another restoration in 1863.
