About St George's Catholic Church

St George’s Catholic Church is a Roman Catholic parish church on Peel Street in central York, within the Diocese of Middlesbrough. It remains an active place of worship and is protected as a Grade II listed building.

Built primarily for Irish Catholics who had settled around Walmgate, the church replaced an earlier brick chapel near the present Duncombe Place. Joseph Hansom and Charles Francis Hansom designed it in the Early Decorated Gothic style. Its foundation stone was set in October 1849, and it opened in September 1850. It was the original pro-cathedral for the Diocese of Beverley, serving in that role until 1864. Joseph Hansom later designed the presbytery, completed in 1858. Interior features include a Caen stone altar, repositioned in 1972, a carved Flemish rood screen, and an east window adapted from a design by Pugin. The organ, restored in 2004, is York’s oldest.
