About St Chad on the Knavesmire
St Chad on the Knavesmire is an active Church of England parish church on Campleshon Road, serving York’s South Bank district in North Yorkshire. It was added to the statutory list at Grade II in 2004.
Walter Brierley drew up the design for a new church commemorating G. Argles, who had been rector at St Clement’s. Building work commenced in 1925 and was still incomplete when Brierley died a year later. The vestry dates from 1928, the same year that an independent parish was created. Francis Johnson brought the project to completion in 1966, though roughly half of the intended scheme was ultimately built. Behind the brick exterior is a concrete frame with a vaulted concrete covering. Architectural details include a porch within the north-west tower, a Saint Chad figure set into a brick recess, slender pointed windows and full-height exterior supports. The interior has a combined nave and chancel, side aisles, an organ loft and an eastern chapel, together with a hexagonal pulpit made in 1940.
