About Saint Giles
Saint Giles is an active Church of England parish church in Copmanthorpe, within the southern area of York, North Yorkshire. Located on Church Street, the church is recognised for its historic and architectural interest with Grade II listed status.
Dating from around 1180, it began as a dependent chapel of St Mary Bishophill Junior. Copmanthorpe became a separate ecclesiastical parish in 1866. The fabric is mainly Magnesian limestone, with rendered sections, and surviving Norman details include the principal entrance and bell turret. Early round-headed windows also remain. C. Hodgson Fowler oversaw substantial alterations in 1889, creating a chancel, vestry and space for the organ, as well as replacing floors and pews and reconstructing parts of the masonry. Charles Eamer Kempe designed the stained glass fitted in the eastern window that year. Further work brought a porch and replacement vestry in 1977, the adjoining Saint Giles Centre in 1992, and a west-end narthex with practical facilities in 2013.
