About Church of St Martin
The Church of St Martin is an active Anglican parish church in York, North Yorkshire. A place of worship with medieval origins, it was designated a Grade I listed building in 1954.
Its nave was constructed during the 11th century, possibly on either side of the Norman Conquest, and the chancel followed in the early 1100s. Extensive alterations around 1400 raised the nave, renewed the quire and tower, and introduced a northern chapel that was later removed. Limestone and sandstone form the walls, while Westmorland slate covers the nave roof. James Demaine and Walter Brierley oversaw restoration in 1893, including replacement of the chancel. Surviving features include a pair of Romanesque round-topped windows, part of an Anglo-Saxon wheel cross, a medieval font and rood screen, and monuments commemorating John de Bulmer and Ralph Bulmer.
