About Church of St Leonard
The Church of St Leonard is a Church of England place of worship in York, North Yorkshire. It has held Grade II listed status since 1960, recognising its architectural and historic significance.
Dating from around 1200, the church retains much of its medieval walling, along with its northern and southern entrances and windows at the east end. Built in stone beneath a Welsh slate roof, it has a continuous nave and chancel with a porch on the north side. Later medieval additions include chancel windows and southern buttresses. Ewan Christian oversaw extensive restoration in 1886, rebuilding the western end and bellcote while adding the vestry and porch. Inside are a Victorian crown-post roof, a 13th-century font with an eight-sided basin, a 17th-century oak communion table and an old parish chest.
