About Church of St James

The Church of St James is the Church of England parish church for Murton, a village just east of York’s urban area in North Yorkshire. Standing on Murton Way, the church remains in parish use and has held Grade II listed status since 1953.

Dating from around 1200, the original building was a plain rectangular limestone chapel serving St Thomas’ Church in Osbaldwick. After storm damage to its roof in 1834 went unrepaired, it fell into ruin and was used for a time to house pigs. Restoration followed in 1914, when the north and east sides were reconstructed, new windows and a tiled roof were installed, and a bellcote was added. A font thought to be from the 12th century arrived around 1950 after being discovered in St Thomas’ churchyard. A modest brick extension, containing an entrance lobby, toilet and kitchen, was completed in 2016.
