About Church of St Helen and the Holy Cross
The Church of St Helen and the Holy Cross is a Church of England parish church in Sheriff Hutton, York, North Yorkshire. Dating from the early 12th century, it remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade I listed status since 1954.
Built from limestone and sandstone, with Welsh slate and lead roofing, the church retains early fabric in the tower and nave. Its chancel was reconstructed during the 13th century, while aisles and chapels were introduced or altered across the following centuries. The tower’s upper stage dates from the early 1400s, and the nave gained a clerestory in the early 16th century. Notable details include medieval stained glass, gargoyles and pinnacles on the embattled tower, several historic memorials and effigies, a 17th-century altar rail, and box pews spanning the 17th to 19th centuries.
