About Church of Saint Hilda
The Church of Saint Hilda is a Church of England parish church serving Ampleforth in the York area of North Yorkshire. It continues in its parochial role and has been protected at Grade II since 1955.
Dating largely from the mid-1100s, the church preserves its original tower opening and a northern entrance that was later repositioned. The southern entrance belongs to the early 1200s, while the sanctuary was renewed towards that century’s close. Constructed from limestone beneath slate coverings, the building includes a western tower, four nave bays and a chancel arranged in two bays. The tower was reconstructed in the 1500s and features pinnacles, a battlemented top and openings for the bell chamber. A substantial renovation by T. H. and F. Healey took place in 1868. Surviving furnishings include a Norman-period font, a medieval grave marker and a 14th-century sculpture portraying a male and female figure. Rough zodiac symbols decorate the northern entrance.
