St Oswald serves as an active parish church within the Church of England. It stands on Front Street in Sowerby, Thirsk, North Yorkshire, and is dedicated to Oswald of Northumbria. The building has held Grade II* listed status since 1966.
Surviving fabric from the earliest known church dates to about 1140, while the south entrance may be older, possibly from the eleventh century. Much of the nave’s southern wall retains medieval masonry. The fifteenth-century tower incorporates remnants of the Norman building and has a hagioscope providing a view towards the altar. Restoration and enlargement in a nineteenth-century Norman style took place in 1842. Further work in 1883 added an open timber lantern and slate-covered spire above the crossing. In 1902, the northern wall was replaced by an arcade and a large aisle was constructed. Reordering during the 1980s included a detached altar intended to bring worship closer to the congregation.
