About St Lawrence, Carlton Miniott
St Lawrence, Carlton Miniott is a Church of England church in the village of Carlton Miniott, near Thirsk in North Yorkshire. It has held Grade II listed status since 2005 and retains much of its late Victorian design and interior decoration.
A chapel serving St Mary’s in Thirsk stood here by 1621 and was recorded as a modest building in 1848. C. Hodgson Fowler replaced it in 1895–96, reusing carved timber from the earlier chapel. Built in red brick with stone detailing and red roof tiles, the church comprises a nave, south porch, chancel and vestry. A small spire with a timber bell housing and slate cap rises where the nave meets the chancel. Inside are a painted curved ceiling, wall panelling, pews and a reredos from Fowler’s scheme. The east stained-glass window portrays Christ’s crucifixion and forms part of a war memorial, while the pulpit came from the former building.
