About St Mary's Chapel, Lead
St Mary’s Chapel, Lead is a small former Anglican place of worship in an isolated field setting at Scarthingwell, North Yorkshire. Now redundant, the church is protected at Grade II* and is cared for by the Friends of Lead Church. An annual service is held there. Its proximity to the battlefield of Towton links it with the Wars of the Roses.
Dating from the early 14th century, probably 1301, the stone chapel may have served a vanished medieval manor and was likely commissioned for the Tyas family. Archaeological work in 1934 uncovered evidence of an earlier religious building, including two stone coffins and a grave marker from the ninth or tenth century. The simple rectangular structure has a western bellcote, possibly medieval benches, an eighteenth-century three-tier pulpit, a font and a stone altar incorporating an older altar slab. Local walkers rescued the ruined chapel in the 1930s, leading to repairs and its rededication in 1932.
