About St Joseph's

Standing at 41 Potter Hill, St Joseph's is a Roman Catholic place of worship in Pickering, North Yorkshire. The church and its adjoining hall have been protected as Grade II listed buildings since 1975.

Nicholas Postgate celebrated Mass in Pickering during the 1600s, but regular worship later ceased. Catholic services resumed in 1896, initially in the Salvation Army hall with a priest travelling from Malton. Father Edward Bryan settled in Pickering in 1901, bought two cottages and converted one into a chapel while raising money for a permanent building. Leonard Stokes designed the present church, completed in 1911. Constructed from stone beneath a tiled roof, it has a nave, northern aisle and a tower linking it with the hall. A figure of Saint Joseph on the southern wall is attributed to Peter Paul Pugin. Inside are an eight-sided font and a stone altar, both associated with Eric Gill, together with a carved holy-water stoup and simple oak seating.
