About Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul
The Parish Church of St Peter and St Paul is Pickering’s Church of England parish church, within the Diocese of York. It occupies a modest rise close to the heart of this North Yorkshire market town, and the spire forms a prominent feature in views across Ryedale. The church is protected as a Grade I listed building and remains especially significant for its medieval murals.
A place of worship probably existed here during Anglo-Saxon times, represented today by an early font and part of a sculpted cross. Reconstruction took place around 1140, with aisles added on the northern side in 1150 and the southern side in 1190. Following the tower’s collapse around 1200, another was erected at the western end, later receiving its spire. Enlargement of the chancel around 1300 left it unusually broader than the nave. Fourteenth and fifteenth-century chantry chapels preserve stone effigies, while the nave displays paintings of saints, episodes from Christ’s story and charitable deeds.
