About Methodist Chapel

Methodist Chapel in Pickering, North Yorkshire, is the town’s place of worship maintained by the Methodist Church of Great Britain. Formerly used by the Primitive Methodists, it received Grade II listed status in 1975.

Completed in 1885 to a design by Thomas Howdill, the Italianate stone chapel cost £3,500. Part of this expense was covered through the sale of an earlier Bridge Street chapel to a railway company. The building originally provided seating for 550 people, with room for 400 children in its Sunday school. Its two-storey frontage has four bays divided by pilasters, a pediment with a round window, paired central entrances with ornamental fanlights, and arched windows detailed with keystones and impost bands. Notable interior features include an extensive gallery, distinctively curved pews and a brass memorial honouring those lost in the First and Second World Wars.
