About St Botolph
St Botolph is a Church of England parish church serving Carlton in Cleveland, in the Middlesbrough area of North Yorkshire. Designed by Temple Lushington Moore, it remains the village’s parish church and has held Grade II listed status since 1966.
A medieval chapel once stood in Carlton, which had become a separate parish by 1611. The earlier church was altered in 1878 and 1879 but destroyed by fire in 1881. Services sometimes continued among the remains until the present Arts and Crafts building was completed in 1896. Constructed from sandstone, it has a tiled principal roof and stone-covered roofs over the aisles and porch. Its plan includes a clerestoried nave, two aisles, chancel, southern porch and western tower. The two-level tower has a projecting stair turret, clock, paired openings for the bells and a battlemented top. Small windows line the sides, contrasting with the large window at the east end.
