About Church of St Peter

The Church of St Peter at Langdale End, North Yorkshire, is a Church of England parish church serving Hackness. It remains an important historic place of worship and has held Grade I listed status since 1967.

Its origins extend back to the eleventh century, when it stood on the former site of a religious community established by Hilda of Whitby around 680. An early chancel arch remains, while the aisles, western tower and its arch largely date from the twelfth century. Fifteenth-century work introduced the present chancel, clerestory, battlements and octagonal spire. Built of sandstone and roofed with slate, the church gained a vestry in the seventeenth century; its aisles were reconstructed and a porch added in 1870. Interior features include the Anglo-Saxon Hackness Cross, eight medieval misericords, a fifteenth-century font cover and monuments dating from 1592 onwards, including work by Francis Leggatt Chantrey.
