About St Cuthbert's Church
St Cuthbert’s Church serves as the Church of England parish church for Kildale in North Yorkshire. It remains the village’s active place of worship and has held Grade II listed status since 1966.
A church stood in Kildale during the medieval era and was traditionally believed to have much earlier origins. After extensive rebuilding in 1714, the earlier building was replaced in 1868 to plans by George Fowler Jones, using a Gothic design inspired by the 13th century. Constructed in stone and roofed with Welsh slate, the church includes a nave, north aisle, chancel, vestry, south porch and western tower. The tower is distinguished by buttresses, gargoyles, a stair turret, pyramidal roof and weathervane. Inside are two historic fonts, probably dating from the 12th and 16th centuries, alongside four medieval grave covers and part of a medieval cross. Charles Eamer Kempe created the stained glass in the eastern window.
