About St. Margaret Clitherow

St. Margaret Clitherow is a Roman Catholic church on Holly Tree Lane in Haxby, a community to the north of York in North Yorkshire. It remains the parish church for Catholics in Haxby and Wigginton, whose joint parish was formed in 1977.

Local Masses began in Haxby Memorial Hall during 1970. The congregation later met at Wigginton Hall and then at the Anglican St Mary’s Church. Following the parish’s creation, Church Farm House was bought as a venue for weekday Mass. Architect John Black planned the current church, built by William Birch & Sons and finished in 1985 at a cost of £300,000. Designed to seat 250 people, it was consecrated on 13 March 1999. Its modern form combines an uneven façade and stone exterior with interior brickwork. Harry Harvey created glass showing Margaret Clitherow, Wilfrid and Hilda, while Graeme Willson designed the glass for six eastern windows.
