About Church of St John the Evangelist

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Church of England place of worship in York, East Riding of Yorkshire. Set within a grassed churchyard, it has been designated Grade II* since 1953. The church has served as a chapel of ease associated with St Botolph’s Church in Bossall from at least 1404.

Built originally in about 1240, the medieval church once had a nave of four bays, a southern aisle and a chancel. During the 15th century, the nave was reduced in length, the aisle was taken down and the chancel reconstructed. Further changes followed in 1803, with extensive restoration undertaken from 1878 to 1881. Limestone and sandstone form the walls, while Westmorland slate covers the roof. A slender spired bell turret rises where the nave meets the slightly angled chancel. Other features include a 13th-century northern doorway, mainly Victorian Perpendicular-style windows and wall memorials dating back to 1674.
