About Church of St Mary Magdelene
The Church of St Mary Magdelene is an Anglican place of worship in East Moors, beyond Helmsley in North Yorkshire. This isolated district originally belonged to the parish centred on All Saints in Helmsley, but its distance made attendance difficult for local residents. The church holds Grade II* listed status.
Finished in 1882, the building was planned by George Gilbert Scott Jr, assisted by Temple Moore. It is constructed from sandstone, with Westmorland slate covering the nave and lead above the adjoining southern aisle. The layout includes the main worship space, a chancel and a single sloping-roofed aisle. At the western end, a bell turret contains a pair of Tudor-arched openings and rises to a decorated pinnacle. Moore also created the understated font, reading stand and benches. Other interior details include an arched timber ceiling, an ornamental painted screen behind the altar and metal lighting. Early clergy sometimes arrived on horseback and spent the night inside before morning services.
