About St Margaret's Church and churchyard
St Margaret's Church and churchyard in Harwood Dale, North Yorkshire, comprise the remains of a former Anglican place of worship. The roofless church is now a scheduled monument. Although the ruins were stabilised during the late 20th century, subsequent damage and the theft of masonry led to restricted access.
Thomas Posthumous Hoby commissioned the church in 1634 as a memorial to his wife. A new St Margaret’s opened about a mile farther along the valley in 1862, after which the earlier building gradually became ruinous. Constructed from grey sandstone, it has a narrow rectangular footprint, a porch on the southern side and a bellcote at the western end. Surviving details include a three-panel east window divided horizontally, a rounded two-panel west window with a keystone, and paired openings in the northern wall. A sealed ogee-headed doorway also remains, together with faint wall plaster, but the interior fittings have been lost.
