About St Margaret's Church
St Margaret’s Church, in Beswick, is the village’s Church of England parish church. Situated in the East Riding of Yorkshire, it retains its place as Beswick’s Anglican parish building.
Christian worship on the site dates back to Norman times. The modest medieval structure, which contained a nave and chancel beneath a thatched roof, was dismantled in 1871 and collapsed once its fittings had been taken out. James Fowler drew up plans for the successor in an early phase of the Decorated Gothic tradition, providing seating for 130 people. Constructed from small pieces of stone, it includes an apse-ended chancel, nave, porch on the southern side, northern vestry and a braced tower at the west end. A spire crowns the tower, bringing the overall height to 23 metres. Within are a reredos carved from Caen stone and a tiled floor by Minton.
