About Holy Cross Church
Holy Cross Church is a Church of England parish church in Gilling East, North Yorkshire, serving a parish that also encompasses Cawton and Grimston. Historically associated with dedications to Saint Mary and Saint Helena, it remains part of a benefice shared with Oswaldkirk, Stonegrave and Ampleforth. The church has held Grade I listed status since 1955.
Its earliest surviving arcade dates to about 1200. The chancel followed in the early 14th century, with the south arcade added soon afterwards, while the tower was built in the late 15th century. Three bells bear the dates 1664, 1701 and 1773, and a spiral stair provides access to them and the east-facing clock. Victorian work included an organ chamber completed in 1883 and the installation of an east window with reticulated tracery. At the west end stands the tomb of local landowner Sir Thomas Fairfax, who died in 1828. The present clock dates from 1908 and was funded through cricket matches organised by Prince Ranjitsinhji.
